acne retin and benzaclin treatment, very dry skin, help?

My dermatologist put me on a regimen with tretinoin (retin a) at night before bed and benzaclin in the morning. I have been on this regimen for about two weeks now, no major improvements, a bit better and actually breaking out worse in some spots, and VERY DRY, RED and FLAKY ... questions: (1) Can I put moisturiser after tretinoin at night? and if so how long after should i wait to apply the moisturiser? (2) The Benzaclin I know I can use the moisturiser and then make up, but how long should i wait to apply the moisturiser and make up after the medication? (3) Has anyone been in this same medication regimen? worked for anyone? and in how long? ... the dryness and falkiness is really bad. Thanks for your feedback!

yes i was on this regimen for several years. first of all, it is normal that your skin is red and you are breaking out a little more than usual because this is the beginning (the whole has-to-get-worse-before-it-gets-better thing).

about the retin a: this stuff is really great especially at clearing out pores and reducing blackheads, but it is powerful stuff. my guess is that you are using a cream that has too high a percentage of tretinoin. see if the doctor can prescribe one with a lower percentage. also, most of the redness is probably from the retin a and for me at least, this never really did go away completely until i stopped using it. it just has that effect. i probably wouldnt use a moisturizer over the retin a.

about the benzaclin: this is probably what is actually making your skin dry so maybe use it sparingly and increase as your skin gets less dry. as for applying moisturizer and make up: make sure the benzaclin has dried and then apply those things.

so, good luck with this regimen. it does work, but the trade off is skin thats always a little irritated. just remember to use as little of these 2 medications as possible and see if the small amount works. then if you need to use a little more, increase that gradually.

as for me, eventually i decided to take accutane which is a powerful medication but it worked really well. the topical skin treatments sort of stopped having an effect so i had to do this.
