Should Your Sunless Tan Solutions Have Natural Ingredients or Not?

When buying sunless tanning products, beware!  There may be quite a few harmful chemicals hidden under natural or organic brand names.  The absolute best type of product for sunless tanning contains no parabens or other chemically unnatural ingredients that, when combined, form toxic substances. 

Your skin is the largest organ of your body.  Toxins are eliminated through the skin typically in the form of sweat.  On the flip side, skin will absorb an extraordinarily large amount of what is applied to it.  This is the reason that over the counter drugs, such as Nicoderm, and transdermal medications are so effective.  Unfortunately, there is an ever-increasing list of potentially toxic health damaging ingredients that are found in many sunless tanning products.

Many people will only look at the active ingredients in a sunless tanning formulation and completely disregard the more potentially harmful inactive ingredients.  Some tanning solutions have actually been found to have formaldehyde, which can be a contributing factor in cancer development. 

Parabens are chemicals that are found consistently within almost all chemical based sunless tanning products.  Parabens are usually used as preservatives and fall under the names of butylparaben, ethylparaben, methylparaben and propylparaben on their ingredient labels.  Parabens have been shown time and time again to disrupt hormones in humans and can potentially cause cancer, including skin cancer.  Aren't you trying to avoid skin cancers by using products for sunless tanning?

Phthalates, even though it may not be listed as an ingredient on your tanning solution, may be listed under a host of complicated, 20 letter word chemical combinations.  If you're not sure of any ingredient, do your research.  This toxic chemical is a fragrance and it is most used as a fragrance in vinyl shower curtains, which can be overpowering in its nature.  Phthalates have been found to disrupt hormones and decrease sperm count.

Nitrosamines are not often listed as an ingredient on a tanning product.  This is because they are generally seen as impurities, not ingredients.  This toxic ingredient is so prolific, it's found almost exclusively in every skin care product, including sunless tanning solutions.  The classification of impurity generally means that when a few of the existing ingredients are mixed together, they form nitrosamines, which has been found to cause cancer.

Many times, tanning products contain so many chemicals to mask the smell of the skin's reaction to the natural active ingredient DHA.  Therefore, many will add oils, preservatives, perfumes and alcohols to try and mask these smells.  Unfortunately, almost any solution available, whether chemical based or not, will invariably cause a post-application smell, especially in the shower.  This is perfectly natural.  In essence, why would you want to put potentially and highly harmful chemicals onto your skin to mask DHA if it's going to smell anyway?

Sunless tanning products are definitely not all created equal.  More and more companies are coming to the conclusion that all natural is not just being health conscious but is extremely lucrative as well.  Almost all cosmetics, including sunless tanners, still contain some potentially harmful inactive ingredients such as parabens, phthalates, nitrosamines, formaldehyde as well as alcohol.  Be mindful of these ingredients when you purchase these products.

i would like to know what your favorite sunless tanning product is and why u think it is so great.

fake bake is good, u can just put in on any old way and it turns out well, with no streaks, watch out for wrists and ankles though, that applies for every fake tan. i would recommend fake bake though.
